How Often Should a Hot Tub Spa Be Serviced
By Sam J. — Master Spa Technician & Owner at DB Spa Repair & Service
Learn how often a hot tub spa should be drained and refilled, why regular water changes are important.

We get these questions all the time:
- How often should a spa be serviced?
- Why does a spa even need service?
- Do I really need to hire a professional?
All of these are great questions.
A hot tub spa is an appliance — and a very expensive one at that. Just like any other appliance in your home, such as a refrigerator, washer, or dryer, it requires maintenance from time to time to help prevent damage and failures in the long run.
Believe it or not, even refrigerators should be serviced occasionally. Dust builds up around the compressor and coils, washers develop buildup from detergents and softeners, and dryers collect lint around the internal components and vents. A spa is no different.
Why Should a Spa Be Serviced?
One of the most important things you can do for your spa is drain and refill it regularly. In most cases, a spa should be drained and refilled at least every 4–6 months depending on usage.
Over time, the water begins to develop high TDS levels, which stands for Total Dissolved Solids. This is essentially a buildup of used-up chemicals, dead sanitizer, minerals, oils, and other contaminants that accumulate in the water over time.
So what is bad about high TDS?
When TDS becomes too high, the water becomes saturated. Fresh sanitizer can no longer move and mix through the water as effectively. This means you may find yourself using larger amounts of chemicals just to maintain the same water quality.
The problem with this is:
- You end up spending more money on chemicals
- Water balancing becomes harder
- The water can become corrosive
- Scale buildup may occur
- Damage to spa equipment can happen over time
Fresh water allows chemicals to move and work properly again, helping maintain clean, balanced water without excessive chemical use.
Can You Service the Spa Yourself?
Absolutely.
Hot tubs are designed so homeowners can perform basic maintenance themselves, just like someone can change the oil in their own car.
However, many customers choose to hire a professional because it saves time, effort, and the hassle of dealing with chemicals, cleaning, and maintenance equipment.
When hiring a professional service company, we already have:
- The tools
- The cleaning equipment
- The water care products
- The experience
- The testing supplies
This allows us to service the spa properly without you having to buy equipment or supplies you may only use once or twice.
Hiring a professional also frees up your time while helping ensure the spa is cleaned, balanced, and inspected properly.
At the end of the day, the choice is completely up to you.
